Known for exquisite luxury jewelry and the highest competence in working with gemstones as well as a supplier of the most sought-after luxury watch brands, the history of the Swiss family-owned company Gubelin begins in 1854. Eduard Jakob Gubelin opened a watchmaking shop in the Swiss city of Lucerne at the time. Over time, the small shop grew and moved into larger premises in the city until it settled on the first-class location on the Quai, where the Gubelin Boutique Lucerne is still located today.
In the 1920s, Gubelin opened its own jewelry atelier and at the same time set up a small gemological laboratory to guarantee the authenticity of the gemstones with which the jewelers worked. In addition, fine watches were produced for a demanding clientele. The house acquired an excellent reputation throughout Europe and overseas.
After establishing seven boutiques in Switzerland over the years, Gubelin opened the first Hong Kong branch of Gem Lab in 2010. The opening of a private salon in Hong Kong and the founding of the Gubelin Academy followed in 2013. In 2017, the company opened a Gem Lab branch in New York. In the same year, Gubelin launched “Provenance Proof” – an initiative that promotes and develops transparency throughout the gemstone industry with new technologies.
Today, the sixth generation of the family is responsible for the company and continues the family tradition.
